Rose Expo FUKUYAMA: Japan’s City of Roses Comes Alive Every May

Every May, the city of Fukuyama in Hiroshima Prefecture transforms into a celebration of roses, music, and spring colors during the annual Rose Expo FUKUYAMA and the famous Fukuyama Rose Festival.

Held around the middle of May each year, the festival attracts nearly 300,000 visitors over two days, making it one of western Japan’s largest flower events. Streets fill with people enjoying rose gardens, stage performances, local food, and lively parades.

A City Built Around Roses

Fukuyama is often called the “City of Roses.” Roses are planted throughout the city center, not only inside parks but also along sidewalks and public spaces. Even first-time visitors can feel how deeply roses are connected to the identity of the city.

One of the most beautiful places during the festival season is Bara Park (Rose Park), where colorful roses bloom beneath elegant archways. Walking through the garden feels peaceful despite the large crowds gathering nearby for the festival events.

Easy Access from Fukuyama Station

One of the best things about visiting the Rose Festival is how easy it is to reach on foot from Fukuyama Station.

The walk takes about 15 to 20 minutes, and visitors can simply follow the special “Rose Road” signs painted along the sidewalks.

The English signs make navigation easy even for international travelers. It is a surprisingly pleasant walk through the city, especially during the rose season when flowers can be seen in many streets and small gardens along the way.

More Than Just Flowers

The Fukuyama Rose Festival is not only about photography and gardens. During the event, the city becomes full of energy with:

  • colorful parades
  • live performances
  • local food stalls
  • music events
  • family-friendly activities

The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming, making it enjoyable even for visitors who are not flower enthusiasts.

Visiting Outside the Festival

Even outside the main festival weekend, the rose gardens remain beautiful throughout May. Visiting a little earlier can also be a good choice for photographers who prefer quieter conditions and softer morning light.

This visit was made about one week before the main festival, when the roses were already blooming beautifully and the crowds were still manageable.

Travel Tip

If you are planning a spring trip to Hiroshima or western Japan, Fukuyama is an easy stop along the Shinkansen line between Osaka and Hiroshima.

The combination of walkable streets, thousands of blooming roses, and the friendly local atmosphere makes Rose Expo FUKUYAMA a surprisingly memorable destination in Japan’s spring season.
