Many people imagine Japan’s red-crowned cranes standing gracefully in snowy winter landscapes.
However, during a visit to Kushiro in eastern Hokkaido, I discovered a completely different side of these famous birds — a quiet summer scene with a crane family raising their chick in the green wetlands.
What surprised me most was how close this place is to Kushiro Airport.
The Kushiro City Red-crowned Crane Natural Park can be reached in a short drive from the airport, making it one of the easiest places for visitors to experience Hokkaido’s wildlife without traveling deep into remote areas.

In July, the wetlands are filled with deep green grass and warm sunlight.

The young crane chick was already walking confidently beside its parents, although its soft brown feathers still made it look adorable and slightly awkward.
The red-crowned crane, known as “Tancho” in Japan, is one of the country’s most symbolic birds.
It represents longevity, elegance, and good fortune in Japanese culture.
Seeing a chick growing safely in summer felt very different from watching the famous winter dance performances.

Because the park is located near Kushiro Airport, it is also a convenient stop for travelers exploring eastern Hokkaido.
Even visitors with limited time can enjoy a rare wildlife experience shortly after arriving in the re

While winter photographs of red-crowned cranes are famous around the world, summer offers a quieter and more intimate view of their lives.
Watching a crane family calmly walking through the grasslands became one of the most memorable wildlife moments of my trip to Hokkaido.
One of the most surprising things about this experience was how close the park is to Kushiro Airport.
Visitors can encounter Hokkaido’s iconic red-crowned cranes only minutes after landing in eastern Hokkaido.
